A selfish or not so selfish evaluation of my prayer life

I came across this quote today when I was reading and motivated me evaluate my prayer life.

“How much thought does [our identification with Christ] provoke?  Is it not true that our prayers for ourselves are almost entirely aimed at getting rid of the negative at any cost rather that praying that the negative be faced with the proper attitude?” Francis Schaeffer

Although I am not necessarily in agreement with the idea of receive every negative thing that comes our way I do think there are some things that can be brought out about our prayer life of at least my prayer life.   It motivated me to spend some time with DaRonn and evaluate what are the major focuses of my personal prayer time?  Has my prayer become a time of presenting my desires to God as a Christmas list or is it a quality time from Him.  When I set apart my time with Him in the morning could it be like sitting down with a shopping catalog placing my order of what I would like to have or is it more of a time of fellowship with The Father.

I have the amazing honor of having the ear of the creator of all things for a few minutes each morning. How am I using that time?   Not that it is wrong for me to ask for things.  I have many needs but the challenge is not allowing those needs distract me from the real reason why I am coming to The Father in prayer which is to fellowshipping with Him.   If I never receive another thing from God would I still have ample reasons to seek Him in the morning?

  1. This is a great discussion. I am honored to be married to a man who asks the tough questions. Love you babe!

  2. Good stuff. I have been thinking about the same thing lately. I think I need to make some changes.

  3. That’s awesome! Some good stuff to think about!

  4. Thanks Angie. Seems we are always in a thoughtful position.

Romon. We all are in a process of changing and making changes. It is a good sign.

Andrew. Thanks for stopping by. I do not know if it is good stuff for others to think about but it has been good stuff for me to think about.

  5. “Challenges, struggles, tough times, the unexpected” … these could be thought of as negatives … but as time goes on, with prayer and reflection laid upon these events … it is amazing how “God can make ALL things good” … even what we perceive as negative … our challenges can be blessings ( but not always realized immediately … but in time, with patience, prayer, and relection … hm-m-m and obedience) …

  6. Janice. Thanks for the observations. True stuff.
